Why Books?

Why do we carry so many books?

This is a question our team gets asked, and asks ourselves many times.  We have a personal connection to books, and all the places they can take you.

Our commitment to books on all subjects, but especially for children is quite personal.  We have a strong belief in reading, reading early and reading often to help our children grow and learn.

It all loops back around to my mother.  Many (many) years ago, growing up in a single mother household, without any extra money for toys, and entertainment, my mother would find herself spending many hours at the local library.  She found it a place of comfort, quiet, acceptance that she did not find at home.  Her home was not a solid foundation for her to spread her wings and grow.

My mother spent many hours reading fantasy tales, learning about distant places, reliving history, and letting her imagination take her to all the places she wanted to visit.  She became friendly with the librarians and always felt safe with them.  This spilled over into her education.  My mother was very studious, always learning, always wanted to succeed, and did in many ways.

This connection with books spilled into my life, again spending many hours at the library with my parents growing up, and onto our child as they grew up.  Many afternoons were spent just playing with the train station set up at the library, participating in their activities or guest speakers, or simply wandering the shelves in a new area of the library to see what’s there.

My mother is now retired, but still spends many, many hours reading, being part of book clubs at the library and still having a strong connection to our librarians.

We have seen the commitment to reading either to children, or hearing them read to us can lead to.  Helping to expand their vocabulary, spark their imagination or get them thinking about something they might never have experienced in their own world.  The early commitment to reading and learning can help children in so many ways.  Focusing on their education can really give them a strong start, and help open doors to whatever they choose to do in the future.

For all the children we have in our customer’s families, for the men waiting while their wives are shopping, and pick up a book while they wait, for all the moms needing a few moments to themselves, and for all the other grandmothers in our lives with fond memories of the books they have read over the years, we commit to having books, lots of books, at affordable prices for all to enjoy.  We always say yes to books!
